What is the best product to fill cracks in external render?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.35 PM

I am in the process of making repairs to my house prior to selling it. There are a few cracks in the external render that need filling. The wall is pebble- dashed and the cracks don't appear too deep. I would like to do the repairs myself but need to know what to fill the cracks with. Also, do I sand the filled cracks when dry? My plan is to paint the outside of the house when these repairs are done. Can I paint the outside of the house before I have the wall replastered where there is penetrating damp? Any advice is welcome as this has been an ongoing problem for a while and I really want to get these repairs done so that I can sell up and move.

Soudal RepaCryl D is a textured specialist Acryllic Polymer Based Crack Repair Sealant & Filler for use in areas where a granular type finish is required. RepaCryl D can be used as a sealing compound for cracks in concrete, pebble dash, plaster and stucco. This is the best for pebble dash you should not need to sand it before painting.

To fill cracks in external render, especially on a pebble-dashed wall, you'll want to follow these steps: 1. **Clean the Surface:** Before you start, make sure the area around the cracks is clean and free of loose debris, dirt, and dust. Use a stiff brush or a pressure washer to clean the surface thoroughly. 2. **Choose the Filling Material:** For smaller cracks, you can use a flexible exterior filler or a masonry repair compound. These are available at most hardware stores. Make sure to select a product suitable for external use. 3. **Fill the Cracks:** Apply the filler or repair compound into the cracks using a putty knife or a caulking gun if necessary. Press the material firmly into the crack, ensuring it fills completely. Smooth the surface so it's level with the surrounding render. 4. **Let It Dry:** Follow the manufacturer's instructions for drying times. Typically, this may take a few hours to a day or more, depending on the product used and weather conditions. 5. **Sand (if Necessary):** If the filled cracks are not perfectly smooth, you can lightly sand them once they are completely dry. Use a fine-grit sandpaper to achieve a smooth finish. 6. **Priming and Painting:** Once the cracks are filled and smoothed, you can proceed to prime and paint the exterior of your house. Use a high-quality exterior primer and paint suitable for the type of surface you have. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application and drying times. Regarding the issue of penetrating damp, it's generally recommended to address any damp problems before repainting the exterior of your house. Painting over damp areas can lead to paint failure and further damage. If you suspect penetrating damp, it's best to consult with a professional or a contractor to assess the extent of the issue and determine the necessary repairs. In summary, you can paint the exterior of your house after filling and smoothing the cracks, but it's essential to address any damp issues first to ensure a successful and long-lasting paint job.
