Carpet underlay and wooden flooring
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.46 PM
I'm planning on removing carpet in a property I've just bought and put down engineered wooden flooring instead. Just taken up one of the carpets only to find the underlay is glued to the floor. Any advice on the best way to remove this? (Got it sorted)

Unfortunately the best bet is probably a big floor scraper and a rubbish day for yourselves or a tradesman , potentially heat up the floor with a heat gun to soften the glue if it's not coming up at first then back at it with the scraper

You could use an evaporating solvent solution. Perhaps paint thinners or the likes. Rub it in to the glued areas, it will smell, and advise using a mask etc... It will melt the glue enough to scrape it off with ease. Tried and tested tactic... Saves a bit of time over just scraping it off.

Some fitters glue underlay where concrete floors are and also where underfloor heating is. If the property is simply floorboards there is no reason to use glue and staples are the preferred method of underlay installation. The only way to remove underlay that has been glued is scraping with a chisel or wallpaper stripper hand tool.
