Bricklaying & Repointing

Builder appropriate for garage repair job?

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 3.02 PM

Hi I had the garage cleared today, it has been unfortunately full of junk for a while. Inside the garage by the garage door there is a square of brickwork which is built inside of the main wall and looks to have been built to support the garage door. It doesn't appear to be part of the main wall but an additional bit of brickwork, it finishes two courses short of the ceiling After removing all the junk i discovered that a good 5 inches of mortar has gone from under the bottom brick, meaning the bottom brick is not properly supported. I can get my fingers in easily up to my knuckles under the bottom brick The brickwork above shows no sign of cracks or anything. Is this something a builder will come out for? or is it too small a job?? and if so what would be a typical cost? i am assuming it isnt a big job to fix? Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If the customer wanted me to come out and do it for them I wouldn’t turn it down it would be cost effective for you to fix it yourself however, to me it seems that you would just need to push fresh mortar into the area it is missing so that it is compacted tightly in the area.

You'd be better just going into Wickes and getting a tub of ready mixed mortar and doing it yourself. Just brush the loose debris away, wet the area and allow to dry then apply the mortar. Plenty of repointing videos online if you're unsure. Colour match might not be great but it will do the job

I would have to investigate more before making a decision on how to solve the problem but personally I think I would take it down and rebuild adding additional ties to make sure it is solid
