Send deposit and didn't show off

If you pay a deposit and get someone else in the deposit is non refundable . I’ve had many people let me down last minute and change their mind etc and I can lose weeks worth of work and money over it .example .. last month I had a five day job booked in . £1200 job . He paid 400 deposit . Night before job starts he says he’s mates doing it for nothing . I’m down £800 still .

Hello I don't know if will help you but did you have any agreement at the time of the deposit being paid? Did the builder say if it was refundable? And did they give you a start date or contract to what work was going to be completed. It looks to me that someone has taken a deposit from you and left you, but if you had found that person on here then you would be at least able to report the profile so that it doesn't happen again. Customer should only pay for materials first upfront or order themselves. Then outstanding is payed once the job is completed
