Seriousness of small let on hob injector
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.53 PM
A gas engineer recently found the following: "by using the gas sniffer, I detected a very small let on one of the injectors on the cooker hob, however, no drop detected on a gas tightness test. All passed." They advised to replace the injector. How urgent should I do this? Is it a DIY job?

I'd do another tightness test with both the water gauge and CPA device. Use leak detector spray on the affected area as equipment such as sniffers can be set off by some residue and compounds.
If the fault is confirmed. I'd ask for permission to decommission the appliance until the problem can be rectified or replaced. issue warning notice file correct paper work.

If he is detecting gas coming out of the injector, it isn't the injector it is the gas tap for that burne that is required.
The injector is a brass nut with a hole in it.
The gas tap when fully closed should stop any gas coming through.
I would get a second opinion.

If he used a gas sniffer because there was a smell of gas it is ID
And should be acted on accordingly
It's not the injector but the valve that is causing the leak

No it cannot be done as a DIY job. A competent gas safe engineer has to do the job. I would ask another engineer to retest the appliance and use leak detector spray to confirm a leak. If there is a leak the appliance will be classed as at risk and in turn should br capped off by the engineer and repaired before the appliance can be recommissioned and used.

I would ask for a second opinion
The injector is as it implies, it injects gas so is open
The problem if the engineer has had a tightness test with no drop then the gas sniffer should not pick up any gas.
