How far should a steel beam overhang a padstone
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.53 PM
Hi. Firstly apologies if some terminology is incorrect, hopefully you get what I mean. We are having a double height rear extension built. One of the upstairs bedrooms has a set of French doors for a Juliette balcony. The aperture for this has been built, and above it sits a steel beam/lintel onto which sits another angled steel beam, which helps to form a flat roof. On the left hand side of the steel beam overhangs the aperture by 330mm, the other side by just 60mm. This feels a bit skinny to me and googling (dangerous I know) suggests a minimum overhang should be 100mm. I can also see that the concrete block that sits above the padstone is not level on that side, whereas it is on the other. Am I correct in thinking the overhang should be 100mm minimum? Cheers EDIT: Thanks for the two replies so far. I’ve spoken to the builder and he assures me that there is also a smaller steel lintel sitting underneath the beam which extends its bearing (thanks for the correction) across both sides of the aperture, which I guess helps with the old spreading? Does this sound correct? I would have though both beam and lintel would want to be similar in terms of the bearing?
