Bricklaying & Repointing

Moving aperture of door part way through build

Anonymous user 18/02/2024 - 2.30 PM

Hi there. I'm in the process of having a double height rear extension built. In short, due to c0ck up with the archtiect's drawings and our checking of them, a set of frecnh doors are now due to be installed perhaps 500mm too far to one side of the room, which will imapct the view from the room and it's layout. The roof structure is now in place, with the lintel above the aperture for the doors and joists above - ie no battens etc yet but roof will be going on in next 2/3 weeks. My questions is, it possible move the door apertaure across at this stage? and is it an exspensive, alongside it obvisouly being an annoying, job? cheers

You’ll need an architect’s instructions if you’re changing anything that will cover you and the builder

Well first thing is prop above lintol without seeing potential that lintol will need moving over as your need correct bearing , Then tooth out brick:block work rebuild to suit new positioning

Acro up the lintel and build along keying in the coursework, if the roof is already in situ then it’ll hold , no real weight and what there is is minimal, until you can slide along the lintel to fit the new aperture … easier said than done but it’s possible.

If you move the door by 500mm then the lintel above will have no bearing. It would need strong boys cut into the brickwork above the lintel and acrows supporting the joists inside. You would then be able to take the lintel out and adjust the brickwork reveales.
