Builders remove the tongue of the fence when taking off the fence temporarily

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.51 PM

Hi, Our neighbor recently performed an extension at the back of their house, and as part of this construction, they needed to temporarily remove a timber fence that actually belongs to us in order to dig deep for the foundation of the extension. However, what they did was cut off the "tongue" of the timber fence. Instead of restoring it to its original state, they simply nailed the fence back in place. We are wondering if this is the correct way to handle the situation. Should they have left the tongue intact when removing the fence? Would it be possible to request that they reinstall a fence with tongue and grooves, like it was originally? Thank you.

Hi, Yes you are well within your rights to request for it to be put back how they found it. It’s not professional for something to be put back worse than when they took it apart. Hope this helps.

It’s always good to have clear guidelines when working with neighbours and boundaries. This is not best practise at all and conversation should have been held between both you and the neighbour paying for tye work. if they have done a tidy job that has not really effected land and boundaries is there the need for replacement. Did the builders just do it and your neighbour has not even noticed himself. If this is something you are not happy with then if I was your neighbour I would welcome a conversation and I would do my best to make you happy. In some cases builders do just get on to complete the job with out discussions.

If this is Your fence , yes You can ask a neighbour to replace to previously - original slate. Professional builder never not touch a neighbour territory , but if very needed will talk to you and leave all like before or better !
