Laying SWA whilst garden getting renovated

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.35 PM

Hi, Just looking for advice. I am getting paving laid in my garden and have decided to run some swa cable in trenches to futureproof any needs I will have in the near to medium term. I currently have an existing 2.5mm SWA between my house CU and the garage CU, its approx 18m run buried. I want to do the following: Run cable between the house CU and garage for any future EV charger. Lay a cable to an area where I intend to build a shed. Area is approx 10m from garage CU or 25m from house. Lay a cable to decking area where I want an outside socket, its approx 8m from garage CU. I have 25m each of 10mm2, 6mm2 and 2.5mm2. What would be the best use of my available cable....or do I need to buy additional. I was thinking 10mm2 from house to garage for EV, 6mm2 from house to garage to upgrade existing, 2.5mm2 from garage to shed and from garage to decking.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Wow. Firstly forget the 2.5 currently running from house to garage. Ya need to know the electrical load of your car charger also. Personally I'd advise, a 16mm SWA from house to garage. 10mm SWA from garage to shed, for future proofing, provision of skts etc for shed, patio 2.5 SWA cover a skt. Always better over cable sizing. Gives both safety and potential to up grade at later date plus peace of mind.

10mm2 all the way! Future proof! If you dont use full capacity of cable no worries! Better to have it rather than regretting!

I would run a 10mm SWA to the garage and the distribute cables to each point from there . I would put a 6mm SWA to the shed which would more than cover basic utility lights and sockets and also leave enough for future add ons . 1.5 mm would be more than ample for a patio socket . All cables must be protected by the right sized circuit breaker which can found in the latest regs book or online .

Take 10mm from house to garage cu, 6mm from house to shed and 2.5mm from garage to socket, this shud be fine depending the load , you need to know the EV load and what you intend to use in shed.
