Soundproof the shared wall - neighbours have “sunk” tv into wall.

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.35 PM

Hello, I am trying to figure out what needs to be done to soundproof a shared wall with my neighbours. I’m in a mid terraced house, and the walls aren’t particularly thick on either side (ex-council house built in 60s), I can hear shouting, kids screaming - which is fine in the daytime. But recently my neighbours on one side have had a few little “parties” (which is not very often) but I could hear everything. The music was so clear I can hear the exact song, I did ask them to turn it down which I could noticeably hear but still I was awake until it was turned off. I have found out they have sunk the tv into the shared wall chimney (not longer used). Which means I’m my lounge and the 2 bedrooms upstairs which are the shared walls the noise comes through everywhere. It’s not every weekend but I don’t want to hear it again. They have said they removed some plasterboard. Do I need to pop up some floor boards and add insulation “wool” or “foam” all along the shared wall? And then have an interior wall built in the bedrooms so soundproof foam and insulation can be added in between? One bedroom has a flat wall. The other bedroom has the chimney through it - so not a flat wall. And then add some super heavy duty purpose made underlay for soundproofing? Is there anything else I can do? Might seem extreme, but a lot of weekends I am getting up at 5am. Thanks a lot.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Seems to me that your neighbours have been inconsiderate You could have drilled on the wall to place some shelves on. Best way is to build a separate stud wall and put acoustic insulation in between then two layers of the soundproofing board There are other materials that can add to it too so, search reductoclips too. There is also a dense rubber material that can go between the two layers of the plasterboard as well. 5mm gap around the perimeter of the newly built wall, and you can add acoustic sealant to fill any gaps. Bear in mind that sound will travel through ceilings and floors so, if you can add acoustic insulation there, it’ll only improve upon. Hope you get it sorted

Same as above only nothing fixed to existing wall so sound can not travel

Hi, I agree with the pre joys post, but if I’m honest, a set of ear plugs would be the most economical solution. If it’s just to get a decent nights sleep, then they will do the job. Hope you get it sorted. Thanks CRS

Spray Foam insulation by Synthesia is a game changer for sound proofing it's such a dense product you will retain heat and sort the soundproofing out too. Regards David Morrison MrSprayFoam.co.uk
