Bricklaying & Repointing

Building on a solid wall

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.46 PM

I’m building on top of a solid brick wall it’s about 350mm thickness. It will be a kitchen, currently has a mono pitch roof but it’s being raised to accommodate a snug room above. Should I carry on building up in brick which will tie it all in or is there a quicker way, such as using block on the inside with wall ties leaving a cavity of around 150mm and filling in with concrete/ lean mix or even laying block flat? Reclaimed brick on the outside and insulated plasterboard inside finish.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Id personally follow your architects drawings so they apply to building regs

If there’s nothing specified due to structural issues we would build facing brickwork on the outside and if you don’t require a cavity flat blockwork 215mm wide as inside is covered with plasterboard. This then saves you filling cavity with concrete.

I would go with the cavity wall ensuring a cavity tray damp is fitted at the start with weep holes an using a rigid insulation in the cavity clipped to the block work do not fill cavity with concrete or lean mix and use correct amount of stainless steel wall ties

Yes you could do block wall inside and reclaimed bricks on outside using sufficient ties as you go up. Do not fill with concrete or lean mix in the cavity make sure it is insulated. Make sure to use a cavity tray and weep holes but ultimately follow architects drawings and regs.
