Correct electrical cable to connect to outdoor junction box

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.07 PM

I have an existing outdoor junction box fixed to the wall of my house (already cabled in) that I would like to connect a floodlight security camera to (13 Watt LED). I want to place the camera higher up on the wall (about 2 meters) than the junction box so I need to connect the camera to the junction box with electrical cable. I am thinking of using 0.75mm or 1mm, 3 core outdoor rubber flex. I have a couple of questions and would be grateful if someone could advise. 1) Would this be suitable? 2) Would the cable need to match the same type that is already connected to the junction box and if so, what should I use?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, The first thing you need to know is where the junction box is being fed from, it maybe off a lighting circuit switch, or direct from the fuse board? Is it on a 6amp supply or it may be on a 32amp supply? Also you you need to check there is power to this box, and the polarity of the wiring inside before you proced any further.

Assuming its fed on 6a or 10a MCB, and it has RCD protection. You can use 1mm outdoor flex

Junction box got a power of high voltage, camera using low voltage power. Regulations saying that you need to have a distance between power cables and media cables. Not sure what exactly you want to do. Thanks
