Any way to move wiring behind wall which a metal detector has picked up?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.53 PM

Hi guys Is there any way to move the electrical wiring behind wall which a metal detector has picked up (leads to light outlet and socket). I'm trying to mount a TV unit on to a plasterboard wall but the wires seem to be exactly on one of the hanging points. I have Corefix screws hoping to fix onto the breeze blocks behind plastering but after measuring up, I've literally got no where to drill into apart from where the wires seem to run through.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi. Yes the wires can be moved but it's not that simple. If the cables are running down the wall I assume that there is a socket or switch in their path. You would have to reroute them. Making sure they stay inside their allowed zones. Best bet get a electrician

I think you would have to expose the wires to see if the wires can be moved to the left or right of where you need to get your fixing for your TV bracket. All the best with getting your TV bracket on the wall. David controlled services

I would advise getting a registered electrician to come and have a look, most will give you there professional opinion when coming to give you a quote for a solution. Only options would be to re route cables while staying in dedicated zones or cut a small section of plasterboard out so your able to see exactly where the cables are, could also come in handy if you would need power source be-hide tv. Hope this helps

Hi Imran. Drill into the plaster board very gingerly where you would like the TV bracket fixing to be. Make sure the end of the drill bit doesn’t go in further than the edge of the other side of the plaster board. Then get a torch and look in the cavity to see if you can see the wires. Just be very careful not to whack the drill too far behind the plasterboard whatever you do! Get some Wing Spring Toggle Plasterboard Screws that go in and spring out behind the plasterboard to hold the TV bracket in place when tightened up. Sometimes you might need to buy the longer toggle screws because the TV bracket has also got a thickness to it. Go carefully and there should be wiggle room for the wires as well as the fixing. Where there are no wires, yes you can drill straight into the block wall behind because there is no risk of drilling through the wires. Still have a look with a torch even in those places to see if anything is behind before you go ahead and drill in.

Anything is possible. However rerouting the wires probably means channelling into the plasterboard and redecorating afterwards. You should get a qualified electrician to do this. By law, wires can only run in certain places (broadly horizontally or vertically to a socket or switch or, very occasionally, diagonally). You can't just reroute hidden wires around the TV. It seems excessive to move the wires just to hang a TV. Is it not possible to either hang the TV without hitting the wires? Most TV wall brackets are adjustable so you might end up with the supports close together in the centre or far apart right at the edge of the TV but it should be possible to adjust most TV brackets to avoid the wires.
