Do I need a screed or self-leveling compound to level the concrete floor before carpeting?
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.53 PM
Dear all, I was wondering if you can help? I have just removed a laminate floor from a ground floor living room measuring 3.96 metres by 3.43 metres. One the laminate was removed; I discovered the expectant underlying concrete floor. The gap between the concrete floor and the skirting boards is about 20mm. Before the room is carpeted, do I need a self-levelling compound or a screed? Cheers. Cheers.

Just buy a thicker underlay unless there are massive differences in the floor

Hi, you can get deep set self level from most merchants nowadays. Travis sell a brand called ‘Cempolay’ which has varying depths of compound. I think the deepest one goes upto 80mm if memory serves me correctly. Wickes also sell deep set self level, it’s easier to put down than a screed. Hope this helps.

Because of that depth, you are best to screed the floor, then a latex to smooth off

Not necessarily, if you are going for a mid to high range carpet then self levelling would not be needed. To save you money, go for a 12mm underlay then the remaining gap would only be 8mm. A Carpet with a deep pile will cover this gap. Hope this is helpful

Hi,if your sticking the carpet directly to the floor I would laytex compound it.
If the the carpet is being fitted on a underlay I would increase the depth to 10mm upwards.
