Mist coat on newly plastered walls
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.53 PM
I’ve done a coat on fresh plaster but been told I’ve used too much paint to water (too thick) is there a way of correcting this or have I buggered it?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi,
Thanks for your question.
All you need do is sand the mist coat down with a p240 grit abrasive and then paint 1st coat as normal.

It doesn't matter even with thicker paint you will still be able to see any cracks or defects under the miss coat

If your emulsion is not thinned enough, it isn't able to effectively penetrate into the plaster because it's too thick. Imagine putting custard on a sponge... if the custard is too thick it won't soak into the sponge and stick really well.
The consequences can be that the emulsion can peel away from the plastered wall if it's too thick, and often gets worse the more coats of emulsion you apply.
Stick a piece of cellotape on the emulsioned wall, and pull it off to see if it pulls the paint off. If the paint comes off, then you'll need to sand it off and start again!
And if the paint stays on the wall, you'll be fine to leave as is and carry on with the remaining coats of emulsion.

sand down and apply coat again.
I go by a 50/50 rule 50% water to 50% paint
