Choice of mortar mix
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.51 PM
Hi. My 1950s house has holes in the mortar and I'd like to repoint it. The original mortar is quite sandy and looks like it has little bits of shell in it. Should I replace it with a modern mortar mix or is there a particular mix I should use ? Here's a pic. https://photos.app.goo.gl/p3dBMGTgLCuonJ6Y6 The walls are cavity walls.

I would use cement, lime, and sand mix.

I suggest your ask a good local builders merchant the colour of your local sand down in Cornwall it's mainly grey down west at Agnes way we get yellow then over the border we get red they may of used a coloured sand with is available from s specialist many contain aggregate bits when knocked back with churn brush expose the tiny aggregate bits you will have to experiment to get the right blend for colour prob a 4:1;1 mix good luck

Also use sharp sand in the mix, that's probably the more coarse grain that you can see in the mix

Use NHL 3.5 from builders merchant. add course sand to the mix no cement, rake out joints first and compact the lime mortar into joints. Using cement will damage brick face in future.
