New screed floor - ditra mat needed before tiling?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.35 PM

I am in the midst of having my extension built, I have all new UFH (wet) installed with screed ontop which has been sanded down level. Does an uncoupling membrane need to be installed before laying porcelain tiles? Or can they be laid directly on the screed?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Most definitely ditra mat before tiling. The screed will naturally crack as it drys (especially with ufh) and the matting will stop your tiles from cracking as well!

I would say an uncoupling membrane is essential in this one. This is mainly due to the screed not being deep enough to do its job. Sand cement screeds should be laid at a minimum depth of 65mm when floating. This by virtue of it being on Celotex is floating. The thinner the screed is the more propensity it has to curl and the weaker it is in tension so the more it is likely to crack.
