How to insulate flooring
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.46 PM
What's the best practice to insulate a concrete floor in a ground floor flat? Want to upgrade from landlord carpet and squished rolled underlay as it's freezing in winter. Moving to laminate planks.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello, well in that situation the most common method of installation is as follows. Lay the damp-proof membrane onto the concrete, followed by the insulation. Then lay moisture-resistant chipboard, or a concrete screed to the top, which can then be covered by the flooring to finish. Hope it helps you with something.

I would say a thermal underlay suitable for laminate flooring would do the job for you.

Done start putting chipboard under your laminate floor as others have said you end up with nearly 2 inches of height and why you want want to damp proof a rental property is madness. All you need is fibreboard underlay and if you wanted to go a bit further you can get an electric underfloor heating mat, but you’d need to have it wired in. Hope this helps.

Assuming the concrete floor is already in, then what I would do is check moisture content in floor, with a concrete moisture meter, if it's high then you would have to seal the floor first couple of coats, as you said its pretty cool, then check a few days later with moisture meter, if it's OK then proceed to install flooring, install 1200 gauge polythene, depending on your levels, used a good quality underlay foil back and tape the joints, and proceed as normal?
