Bricklaying & Repointing

Miss matching of brikes

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.46 PM

I have had a wall built and due to an error with the one pack of bricks being delivered the following day ( 2 packs total) ordered by the brickie, he proceeded with building the wall full height approx 1.2meters by half the length, when, the following morning the outstanding bricks arrived he built the remainder of the wall, but there is a distinct colour difference, my question is, as I have been informed is, should he have waited and taken the bricks from both packs to mitigate this shading problem.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi to answer your question the bricklayer should have waited for both packs of bricks to be on site depending on the brick as sizes and colour can vary between different batches. Quality of bricks being produced from factor is not always consistent so builder should have not chanced it but work has been done so you have the decision if not happy with overall work to give the builder chance to fix it.

Yes normally the same bricks shouldn’t be that different to stand out most bricklayers load out for walls etc from different packs to blend bricks in rather than solid patches of band colouring

if the bricks are multi, they should be picked from both packs.

Yes he should have waited so that you can mix the bricks together. But also it's the company who delivers them to you who at fault during them not giving the same bach numbers

Yes you should have waited allways best to mix bricks its called banding A brickwork band is a clear change in appearance of the brick and/or mortar across the full elevation of brickwork. This can be due to brick layers not mixing from 3 packs of bricks when laying. All UK Brick manufacturers recommend that bricks are mixed from three packs and this is the British standard.

If the bricks are multi then the bricklayer should have taken from both packs to avoid this situation.

Yes should alway wait for full delivery of bricks to mix there this a way if you to pay out depending on weather you can put up with how it’s build now bricks can be dyed to match them in by magic person we call them they can make look same but try getting money from builder for this is very unlikely if they been paid alway hold some back until your full satisfied with work
