Location of boiler condensate pipe

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.46 PM

Is it safe (in terms of likelihood of freezing during winter months) for a condensate pipe (currently not boxed in) to exit my kitchen at ground floor level and run along an exterior wall with no drop for a length of approx 4ft to an outside drain? I have queried this with my builder who keeps telling me not to worry. I suspect because the alternative would have been a more complicated re-routeing of the pipe and use of a pump. I have no real knowledge of this just a feeling it may not be right. He has actually shouted and sworn at me over my concerns. Please help.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If the pipe is horizontal it should have a pump fitted internally, if there is a fall the pipe should be insulated

If they change the size of outside part of the condense pipe from 22mm to 32mm or even 40mm they most likely won’t have problem with the freezing days. But it’s always better to find a way for a little bit of slop.

I would recommend to get it installed internally, so you don’t have to worry at any point in the future for it to freeze, you could allow it to exit in to a soil pipe, dishwasher or even a washing mashing, alternatively if it is fitted externally make sure it has a fall and it’s insulated.
