Granite slab 20mm large format tiles driveway (What sub base)

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 3.02 PM

Hi I am trying to find out the correct sub base using large format 20mm granite slabs to be tiled and grouted. The driveway will have a Renault master van parked on it too. The ground it clay. I was expecting geotextile membrane (is this needed as many seem to leave it out) Then 100mm or should be be larger MOT type 1 compacted 150MM concreate reinforced based with 6mm wire mesh (been told 100MM) Tiles layed on a bed 50-30mm mortar and pointed. Also for patios many seem to lay directly onto MOT type 1 compacted instead of a 100mm concreate base.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

There is different types of clay in the ground and there is different colours in clay could this tells you how stable the ground is for depth I and if you need clean stone with no fines but personally I would use a 50mm bed cement them down but until you see the job you can’t give a answer

All depends on the ground, if there is alot of clay or signs of movement then hardcore and reinforced concrete base is recommended, if the ground is naturally pretty solid then 100-150mm of compacted mot type 1 is perfectly fine with a 40-50mm full bed of cement

I would lay type one at depth of 150-200mm then out 100-150mm of concrete with rebar through it if it’s for a drive way I would lay the pavers direct onto the wed bed of mortar using a primer on the back of every slab,

20mm tiles aren't advised for a driveway especially parking a van over them there not designed to take such weight and will just crack the slab, your correct about the base 100mm sub-base will be plenty for a driveway and maximum25mm mortar bed for the slabs again I really don't advise 25mm slabs/tiles for a driveway
