Drainage pipe from washing machine is backing up
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 3.02 PM
Hello, My washing machine started to bring up the drainage water from the drainage pipe. Wondering what could be the reason and how to fix. It is connected to the sink pipe but nothing from that is coming back up. So it must be the pipe from the washing machine I think. I do have a video but it doesn’t let me post it on here. Thanks.

If your washing machine is causing water to back up from the drainage pipe, there might be a blockage or an issue with the drainage system. Here are some common reasons for this problem and steps you can take to fix it:
Blockage in the Drain Hose: Check the drain hose of the washing machine to see if it's clogged. Disconnect the hose from the sink pipe and inspect it for any debris or obstructions. Use a long brush or a pipe cleaner to clear any blockages.
Blocked or Partially Blocked Drain Pipe: The drainage pipe that connects the washing machine to the sink or main drain might be partially blocked. If it's accessible, you can try using a drain snake or a plunger to dislodge the blockage.
Drain Pump Issues: The washing machine's drain pump may be faulty or blocked. If the pump is not working correctly, it won't be able to pump out the water effectively, causing backups. You might need to clean or replace the drain pump.
Height of the Drain Hose: Ensure that the height of the washing machine's drain hose is set correctly. If it is too low or too high, it can lead to water backflow. The drain hose should have a loop or be installed at an appropriate height to prevent backflow.
Incorrect Connection to Sink Pipe: Double-check that the washing machine's drain hose is connected securely to the sink pipe. Make sure there are no leaks or loose connections.
Ventilation Issues: If there's a lack of ventilation in the drain system, it can cause water to back up. Check if there are any vent pipes or air admittance valves in the plumbing system, and ensure they are working correctly.
Drain Pipe Capacity: Verify if the drain pipe can handle the flow of water from the washing machine. If the pipe is too narrow or already dealing with high water flow, it may result in backups.
If you've checked and cleared any blockages in the drain hose and sink pipe and the problem persists, it's best to contact a qualified plumber or washing machine repair technician. They can inspect the appliance and the plumbing system thoroughly to identify and fix the issue effectively.
Please note that dealing with plumbing and appliance issues can be complex and may require specialized knowledge and tools. If you're unsure or uncomfortable with troubleshooting the problem yourself, seeking professional help is recommended to avoid causing further damage.

Hi, you didn’t say if it’s a new installation or not, if it’s new, are you certain that the plug was removed before connecting to the sink.
If it’s an old installation and worked fine before then the hose will need to be disconnected and flushed into a bucket. Once the hose is clean, remove any filters from the machine and clean them
Or contact me
Hope this helps

It could be the blockage in the pipe or failed pump of washing machine

Waste pipe could be blocked due to a number of issues such as the drainage pipe not having an adequate fall for water to escape and terminate into drain or the pump on the washing machine could be failing, my advice would be to have a plumber come and see the setup and appliance itself in order to diagnosis this issue for you.
