What is the difference between a boiler and a heat induction unit (HIU)?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.07 PM
Hi, I live in a rented flat and my landlord is talking about installing a new heat induction unit rather than a boiler. Could someone explain what the difference is and how they work? And what might it do for my heating bills? Thanks :)

A gas boiler is a heating device that uses gas (natural gas or propane) to heat water, which then circulates through radiators, underfloor heating, or other heat distribution systems to warm a building. It is typically used in individual properties like homes or small businesses.
On the other hand, a heat interface unit (HIU) is a device that serves multiple dwellings or units in a larger building, such as apartments or a housing complex. It acts as a bridge between the central heating system of the building and each individual dwelling. The HIU takes the hot water from the central system and provides heating and hot water for each apartment separately.
In summary, the main difference is that a gas boiler is a standalone heating system for individual properties, while a heat interface unit is used in shared buildings to distribute central heating to multiple units.
Hope this helps

The main difference between a boiler and an HIU is that a boiler directly heats the water wheras an HIU has no internal heat source and transfers heat from a central or communal heat generator.
