Timber frame mould

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.51 PM

I'm in the process of renovating my shower room...after stripping the tiles & plasterboard etc, i can see areas of mould present on the timber frames (shame i couldn't upload photos to show here). My original plan was to replaster and also add waterproof cement board, and also use water resistant shower panels...but now i'm worried the multiple areas of mould on the timber frame would cause problems later on. Should i replace the timber frame entirely? how much is it to get somebody to do it properly? i.e. to replace the timber frame around the showering area. Thanks alot!

Hi, sounds like it could be wet rot given there’s no pictures, you would be best to renew the timber frame with treated timbers as it’s for a shower room.

When it comes to dealing with mold in your shower room, it's important to prioritize proper remediation to ensure a healthy and long-lasting renovation. Here are a few steps you can consider: Assess the extent of the mold damage: Determine the severity of the mold growth on the timber frames. If the mold is superficial and hasn't compromised the structural integrity of the frames, you may be able to treat it without replacing the entire timber frame. Consult with a professional: It's advisable to consult with a mold remediation specialist or a professional contractor experienced in dealing with mold issues. They will be able to assess the situation accurately and provide recommendations tailored to your specific circumstances. Remediation options: Depending on the severity of the mold growth, the professional may recommend different approaches. This could range from treating the affected areas with appropriate anti-mold solutions to removing and replacing the mold-infested sections of the timber frame. Cost considerations: The cost of replacing the timber frame will depend on various factors, including the extent of the damage, the size of the area, and local labor rates. It's best to consult multiple contractors and obtain detailed quotes to get a more accurate estimate. Remember, mold growth can be a health hazard, so it's crucial to address the issue properly. Prioritize the health and safety of yourself and your household when planning the renovation

If not rotten just paint it with an off the shelf wood preserver. Bigger question is why is it mouldy? Showers cause mould if not very well ventilated. Have you got an extractor fan?
