Bathroom Fitting

Wedi board installation on Aircrete wall and Primers for normal plasterboards

Anonymous user 11/03/2024 - 2.30 PM

I have stripped my bathroom mostly bare and the idea was to prep it ready so I get a tiler to do the tiling. One of the walls is the aerated aircrete grey block. I will be putting up (1250x600x12.5mm) wedi boards on this. I have purchased the Everbuild S.B.R primer to prime this wall. The sink & wc area on another wall will also have wedi behind it but luckily it will be on existing stud work. I am sorry about the length/series of questions (a) Which type of adhesive(brand) should I use to apply the Wedi boards to the wall? (b) Should I apply the wedi board to the wall using dot & dab method or do I need to apply adhesive to the whole wall surface?. I'm assuming both options still require me to also screw the wedi to the wall as well Which type of fixings should I use for this wall? (c) I have peeled the paint back on one other plasterboard wall so its now down to skimmed /plastered surface (mostly). I will be doing some very light sanding to remove any paint flaking. Do I need to prime this as well so that it can be tiled. If so please can you recommend a primer brand? (d) I have another stud work backed wall (non wet area) where I have replaced with new plasterboard. What brand primer should I be using before it's tiled over I get confused about what primers to used hence why I am asking about which make / brand so all I just have to do is get it rather than trying to decipher what time of primer it is... if that makes sense Thanks for taking the time to read

Hello Carlton85824 I hope you are well, There are many types of adhesive brands you can use to adhere the wediboard to the wall, mapei, kerakoll h42 , ardex are to name a few I would recommend getting a rapid drying adhesive as it may help in no slippage, and my prefered method would be skimmed on with a 10-12mm notched trowel both on surface of wall and back of wediboard with wall plugs and wedi washers. As for the sanded plasterd wall the everbuild S.B.R primer will also work very well in priming the surface, I personally use mapei or ardex primer on all my surfaces. In most cases try to always go for a impregnating water based primer as it will adhere to most surfaces and will dry quicker, when in doubt use two coats of primer allowing each coat to dry before applying another. Thankyou I hope this helps

(a) For the adhesive to apply Wedi boards to the aircrete wall, you should use a high-quality, moisture-resistant adhesive suitable for bonding to porous surfaces. One recommended brand is BAL Bond SBR. It is a water-based SBR bonding agent that provides excellent adhesion to a variety of substrates, including aircrete. (b) When installing Wedi boards on the aircrete wall, it is best to apply adhesive to the whole wall surface rather than using the dot and dab method. This ensures better adhesion and coverage. Additionally, you should also use screws to secure the Wedi boards to the wall for added stability. For fixing the Wedi boards, you can use corrosion-resistant screws designed for use with insulation boards. (c) If the plasterboard wall has been skimmed or plastered and is in good condition, you may not need to prime it before tiling. However, it is always recommended to prime the surface to enhance adhesion and ensure a consistent surface for tiling. A suitable primer for plasterboard is the British Gypsum Thistle Bond-It Primer. It is specifically designed for promoting adhesion to smooth and non-absorbent surfaces like plasterboard. (d) For the stud work-backed wall where you have replaced the plasterboard, you can use the same primer mentioned above (British Gypsum Thistle Bond-It Primer) before tiling. This primer is suitable for various surfaces, including new plasterboard, and will provide a good surface for tile adhesion. It's important to note that the specific products mentioned here are just recommendations based on commonly available options. Before purchasing any product, it's advisable to check with your local supplier or consult the manufacturer's guidelines to ensure suitability for your specific project.
