Bathroom Fitting

Very poor bathroom refit and cheap products used

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.35 PM

I had my bathroom redesigned and refitted 18 months ago. Since this, I've had to have an electrician out and redo the electrical work (long list of inadequacy) but all rectified and managed to recover the costs back from original bathroom guy through small claims, that was 7 months ago. We have now more issues, due to water damage and very poor fitting vanity unit its falling apart (I've had 4 leaks since the refit and no sealant was used around the sink to protect any water going underneath units). We sealed it ourselves to the best of ability and given the poor quality and fit of the unit, its damaged beyond repair. The black taps installed all the black has come off exposing the chrome tap underneath and to top it off the shower tray has cracked (the bath was replaced by shower tray). The list is endless to the finishing touches but I won't bore you with those. I have sent photos and emailed the guy asking him to reimburse me the costs I'll incur in putting this all right (not had a response). Any advice would be great. I paid £4k for this refit less than 18 months ago and it's caused nothing but problems and is going to need some essential rectifying. I am willing to go through small claims again just wondered if anyone else has gone through anything similar or any professionals could give me some advice. Thanks

I'm sorry to hear about the issues you've been facing with your bathroom renovation. Dealing with poor workmanship and the resulting damage can be frustrating. Here are some steps you can take to address the situation: Document the problems: Make sure you have clear documentation of all the issues you've encountered, including photographs, emails, invoices, and any other relevant evidence. This documentation will be crucial if you need to escalate the matter legally. Communicate in writing: If you haven't already, send a formal written complaint to the bathroom contractor detailing the problems and requesting reimbursement for the costs you'll incur to rectify the issues. Be sure to keep a copy of the complaint for your records. It's important to give the contractor an opportunity to respond and rectify the situation. Obtain professional assessment and quotes: Consider getting an independent professional assessment of the problems from a reputable tradesperson or bathroom specialist. This assessment will provide an expert opinion on the extent of the damage and the necessary remedial work. Additionally, request quotes for the costs of repairing or replacing the damaged components. Seek legal advice: If the contractor does not respond or refuses to reimburse you for the necessary repairs, you may need to consider legal action. Consult with a solicitor or seek legal advice from a citizens advice bureau regarding your options and the process for pursuing a claim in your area. Review consumer protection laws: These laws provide rights and remedies for consumers who receive substandard services or products. Understanding your legal rights can help you determine the appropriate course of action. Consider mediation or alternative dispute resolution: Depending on your area, you may have access to mediation or alternative dispute resolution services. These processes can help facilitate negotiations and find a resolution without going to court. Check if such services are available in your area and if they can assist in resolving your dispute. Remember to keep all communication and correspondence with the contractor and any subsequent professionals involved in resolving the issues. This will help support your case if you need to proceed with legal action.

Hi Totally agree with On Demand Building Services, These types of complaints and poor quality workmanship seems to becoming a regular occurrence in this industry, do you have a legal contract with the contractor stating warranties for the installation and products used, this will also help should you have to proceed down the legal route.
