REBUILDING A FLINT WALL
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.35 PM
Hi, I need to rebuild a section of low flint wall at the front of a flower bed in my garden. Should I use a lime mortar, and if so, what kind would you recommend? Thank you.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You can use sand/cement or lime. It's personal preference. A bag of hydraulic lime and sand mixed at 3-1 ratio or 6-1 sand cement

Although everyone says lime mortar...that's OK if its a house with house defences ( a roof).. it will fall to pieces...certainly use lime for colour but also add some ordinary portland or you will regret it.

When rebuilding a low flint wall, using lime mortar is a recommended choice. Lime mortar has been traditionally used in historic and older buildings due to its flexibility, breathability, and compatibility with softer materials like flint. It allows for some movement and reduces the risk of damage to the stones.
There are different types of lime mortar available, and the choice depends on the specific requirements of your project. Here are a few options:
Hydraulic lime mortar: This type of lime mortar sets and hardens through a chemical reaction with water. It offers good durability and strength, making it suitable for areas exposed to weathering, such as the exterior section of a low wall.
Non-hydraulic lime mortar: This type of lime mortar sets and hardens through a process of carbonation, which involves absorbing carbon dioxide from the air. It has lower strength compared to hydraulic lime mortar and is more suitable for sheltered areas or walls that are not subjected to heavy loads.
Lime putty mortar: Lime putty mortar is made by mixing lime putty (hydrated lime) with sand. It is the most breathable type of lime mortar and is commonly used for historic conservation projects. Lime putty mortar takes longer to cure but provides excellent flexibility and compatibility with old materials.
When selecting the type of lime mortar, consider the exposure of the wall to weather, the size and weight of the flint stones, and the overall aesthetic you desire. It may be helpful to consult with a local expert or a supplier specializing in lime products to get specific recommendations based on your project's details and the availability of lime mortar products in your area.

When rebuilding a flint wall, it is recommended to use lime mortar as it provides flexibility and breathability. Lime mortar allows for the movement of flint stones and reduces the risk of cracking. Hydraulic lime mortar, such as NHL 3.5, is commonly used for general-purpose applications.
