Advice on shower: electric vs. mains from dual cylinder submersion heater

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.34 PM

Hello, and thank you for reading. My partner and I have just purchased our first property that came with a dual cylinder electric water heater, and an electric shower in the bathroom. As it happens, the shower needs replacement, and we were thinking of removing the electric shower (Mira Sport) and get a mixer tap powered from the mains; we had a plumber over for a preliminary visit, and he said that it was a terrible idea, and that it would make my electricity bill upwards of £400 monthly. Is this correct? Is there a cost-effective alternative to the double cylinder heater?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi bel_95 I would firstly be checking your incoming water pressure. This is a difficult one to answer because it would depend if what type of cylinder you had. Theoretically you can have a bath/shower mixer even if you have a vented cylinder (tank in loft feeding cold water into cylinder) however I wouldn’t advise then using the mains cold water and gravity hot water together as this will cause issues at the shower valve due to unbalanced pressures. So not a straight forward answer I’m afraid. I’m not sure where the additional £400 figure comes from. Ask your plumber to clarify this

An electric shower heats the water as it goes, if you decide to use any other sources that stores hot water then you would pay for the stored heat and could run out of water, my advise is. Stay with the electric shower or have a comi boiler fitted

8.5kW electric showers are the most energy efficient type of shower. They use the least amount of power to heat water and require only a cold water feed. They're easy to install and there's less pipe work to worry about, making them ideal for second bathrooms or as a replacement shower.
