GRP Roof Leak (Cure It)

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.46 PM

Long post so thanks in advance! We had a felt flat roof extension, with chipboards underneath. There was a water patch on our ceiling which prompted us to fix the roof. Given our budget, the builder said he could put on GRP roofing without changing the boards. Instead just patching up the joints and problem areas with fibreglass. It’s a 40 m2 roof, and he removed all the felt from the entire roof. Then began the fibreglass matting and a layer of resin. Before he applied the top coat, he left for 2 days for it to dry and in that time it rained causing 3 new leaks to occur across the roof. He then came back, sanded it down and applied another layer of resin. He has now covered it in plastic sheets and will return in a few days to apply another layer of resin and topcoat. But there are air bubbles and pinholes under the matting, and I’m worried next time it rains it will come straight through again. He also admitted that he didn’t have enough material to cover the whole roof because he didn’t measure it. He had only two 20kg buckets of cure it resin, 13m2 each. It appears like he didn’t have enough resin or matting which suggests why it leaked. But would love a second opinion for someone. He insistent that he did the application right and is now giving us an ultimatum of - just covering it back up with felt or applying a rubber coat on top. FYI he charged 2k for this. Pls can you advise on what my next steps should be?

Hi Angel, find out the the manufacturer of the roofing product and get them to com out and have a look at the installation, all reputable manufactures will do this. £2K is more than reasonable for 40M2 of flat roof it may even be a little on the low side if materials are included in the deal. Good luck with your roofing project. Chris

Hi angel 12x, Sorry to say you need to get rid of this guy before he does anymore damage to your house as all your doing is throwing good money after bad, you need an independent survey of the condition of your roof to see where you go from here the person you have employed is incapable of completing your roof to a decent standard and will just keep finding excuses while taking your money with no solution.. Good luck Alex

Hi, if you have been charged 2k for a new roof then that is exactly what you should have received. alarm bells ringing strait away if he has gone over the original chip boards. if i was you i wouldn’t put anything over what he has done because it may not bond to the resin or you could potentially get sweating issues. if you want to change to rubber or felt i would strip back to joists and start again with ply. this could be done for between 2/3k

Should be layer on new boards that's why it's bubbling and if was short of material even more problems you can't keep putting on more rasin and top coat still have bubbling
