Hi. I recently had a combi boiler fitted. When I was running the shower my heating did not switch on. When shower was finished then the heating came on. Is this how combi boilers work?? Thank you

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

In combi boilers priority is given to hot water.A diverter valve will re direct flow when hot outlet turned off, radiators will then heat up

Hi yes this is how a combi works, the boiler will priorities hot water over central heating as they both can’t run at the same time.

Combi boilers are activated by a flow sensor which can be a turbine type as is with Worcester and Baxi combination boilers or Reed or Hall flow sensors to name a few. The combi will always have hot water priority over your central heating mode, this means if you are in heating mode and when you open a hot water tap or use a thermostatic mixer shower the central heating is interrupted and normally a diverted valve is activated to produce a small circuit through a primary heat exchanger thereby generating hot water. If for some reason this diverter valve is not fully engaged by either debris or another fault then it will feel like central heating is on in hot water mode with little or no hot water generated and when you turn off the shower or tap the boiler's residual heat will need to be dissipated to the central heating circuit. The hot water flow sensor needs to be assessed if working correctly and then diverter valve and or Printed circuit board on the rare occasion. Hope that helps

Yes. This is exactly how a combi works. They can only do one function at once, and hot water is the priority

A combi boiler will give priority to hot water, it can't do both at the same time so will switch the heating off to give you hot water and then when that demand has been satisfied it'll return to heating your radiators again. Hope that helps.

Yes this is how the Combi works. When there is a demand for hot water from the shower or any tap, the water is diverted from the heating to the shower. Once this demand stops the heating will then continue as normal.

Hi the answer to your question is the hot water always takes priority over heating and so as long as you’re in the shower and running hot water any where in the house the heating will shut off until done. I don’t know if you have a gas engineer to service the boiler which you must get done annually for the warranty but if not I am also available under Bevan Services through my builder and I am very reasonable with rates. Kind regards Iain.

Hi There, This isn't how a gas combi boiler normally works. The heating part of the boiler is a separate circuit that once filled the same water will be pushed around the heating pipes in your property and heated to the required temperature (If required dependent on your temperature settings and whether or not you have your thermostats and programmers on) when it passes back through the boiler. The hot water side of it is Instantaneous so the cold water going to the water is heated up on demand. There are special controls on electric boilers that will cut out the heating when the hot water is in use so as to reduce the energy required if you have a low ampere electrical system. I recommend you contact your boiler installer or a gas safe engineer to have a look for the fault on your system. good luck. Chris
