South facing extension roof - heat
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 3.01 PM
We are looking at options for our single storey extension to replace the footprint of an existing extension with conservatory on the back. It's the roof we can't decide on, we've had various options put to us but our main concerns are heat and light. Would a lantern roof result in us having an unbearably hot space in the summer as we do now in our south facing conservatory? We would avoid if so, possibly tiled with velux - even though we're advised the cost could potentially be the same or more with the latter. Lanterns look amazing but I'm nervous about the heat! Thank you

It's all down to aesthetics, if you want a lantern roof it should work out cheaper and to avoid the room getting too warm you can get blinds etc, they can perhaps be a little noisy when the rain is heavy. No right or wrong answer tbh.

The material I use is single membrane ply and reflects all heat. But with a lantern or sky light you are going to be attracting heat but can avoid this by using tinted glass or velex. Only problem you will have with a tiled roof you will need to insulate it which will attract more heat as with my system will reflect it.
Kind regards
