Kitchen Fitting

Is this kitchen fitting quote reasonable?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.07 PM

Hi, I'm in process of getting a kitchen fitting quote from a few different tradesman/companies, though only got two so far. Would like to get at least one more for proper comparison but struggling to get responses, so thought I'd post here in the meantime for thoughts! My kitchen is roughly 15 x 9ft, and am looking to replace with 11 new units, laminate worktop (and backboard/upstands - walls are currently tiled so need removing). The general kitchen layout is staying the same, so no restructural work needed. I'm not redoing my floor yet, and keeping my existing freestanding appliances, but would need new cooker hood installed. I'm not having any under cabinet lighting (existing to be removed), and will likely just replace the ceiling lights. One fitter has quoted just over £3.5k (inc VAT) for: - Strip out and removal - Plastering walls and ceiling - Plumbing - Kitchen installation as per plan - Connection of appliances Quote doesn't yet include electrical works as he has electrician that would come round to discuss and advise. Another fitter quoted just under £3k for the above but also including electrics (though not sure if this includes VAT or not). I'm aware they are currently estimates as will be subject to site survey etc, but am curious to get thoughts on whether this kind of fitting cost is to be expected for this kind of job? (I'm based in the South) Thanks! — Update: thanks to all those who have answered so far, it’s reassuring to hear that most think the quotes aren’t too far off to what’s expected. Both fitters did an initial site visit. Plastering is to change from artex ceiling to smooth finish, and to smooth down walls after removing all tiling. Both seem to have really good reviews. Will find out if the other (£3k) fitter is VAT registered. Hopefully will be able get a third quote, though my gut is telling me to go with the £3.5k fitter Update - thanks all, my aim definitely isn’t to just go with the cheapest quote, I just wanted to try and get a sense of whether the quotes I got so far are in the general ballpark expected, thanks!

It's very difficult to answer this question because I haven't had the opportunity to see any plans/drawings. I would suggest that as both quotes are similar, they probably aren't too far out. Also, prices vary considerably, depending on location and I would say that the South and South East would be in the higher price bracket Having said all that, I would never estimate for any job without a site visit as there are so many variables that need to be considered.

Hi , normally the kitchen fitting price should include removal as well . Plastering and decorating is different cost . In this case doing all with one builder/tradesmen price should be between 2.5k and 2.8k on the specification you mention and the VAT will be added to the original cost agreed . Thank you

First thing is asked the 3K kitchen fitter if it includes VAT he may not be VAT registered the first one to 3.5 K £600 of that is VAT I’ll try and find somebody Who is not VAT registered I do not quite understand the Ripon out of walls and ceiling I presume there is some making good there and if so does this require materials which are on the quotes Without looking at the job it’s difficult to say but the average will be round 2.5 to 3K Kind regards Pierre 30+ years experience

When it comes to hiring professionals for your home improvement projects, it's tempting to opt for the cheapest quote. After all, who doesn't love a good deal? But here's a word of caution: beware of the cheapest quotes! While it may seem like a cost-effective choice at first, choosing the cheapest option can often lead to a world of surprises and headaches. These quotes are often too good to be true, and for good reason. They may come with hidden costs, double the work, or even unfinished jobs. What you thought would be a money-saving endeavor can quickly turn into a costly nightmare. One of the biggest risks with the cheapest quotes is the compromise on quality. In order to offer such low prices, corners are often cut. This can result in poor quality materials, shoddy workmanship, and subpar finishes. Cutting corners with the cheapest quote can rob you of that satisfaction. Instead, focus on value for money rather than simply going for the lowest price. Look for professionals who offer competitive rates while still maintaining a high level of quality. Remember, you get what you pay for, and investing in a reputable and skilled team will ensure that you receive the results you desire. So, the next time you receive a quote that seems too good to be true, think twice. Consider the potential pitfalls of cheap quotes and prioritize the value and quality of the workmanship.
