Solvent-based undercoat shows through matt emulsion on ceiling. (Water stain on ceiling)

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.52 PM

I had a large brownish water stain on my ceiling. I painted over the stain with a white solvent-based undercoat. I then waited 24 hours and painted one coat of standard white matt emulsion. Although the stain itself seems to be covered by the undercoat, the problem is that the undercoat shows through the emulsion as a slightly darker colour. Does anyone have any tips? Ultimately I'm prepared to paint the whole ceiling, but if there is a clever solution that avoids the need to do that, even better!

Spot prime the affected area with the emulsion a few times or until it disappears. Then paint the full ceiling again. That should cover it.

TO SOLVE THAT PROBLEM PAINT THE SOLVENT UNDERCOAT ON THE BROWN STAINED AREA LEAVE FOR 24 HOURS THEN PAINT JUST THE UNDER COAT WITH THE EMULSION IT IS KNOWN AS SPOTTING LET DRY FOR 1 HOUR THEN YOU CAN PAINT A FULL COAT OF EMULSION ON ALL OF THE CELING THE STAIN WILL BE GONE AND NO DARK AREA WILL BE SEEN WERE YOU HAVE USED THE SOLVENT UNDERCOAT

You need to create a protective layer to prevent the stain grinning through the emulsion in future. Normally solvent/oil based paints will do the trick (as previously mentioned) but if that hasn't worked try using an oil based top coat paint (gloss, eggshell etc) or a high end stain blocker. Apply appropriate coats and let dry until the stain has gone, then apply final top coats of emulsion to blend into the rest of the ceiling. Make sure to use the exact brand and colour of emulsion you used to paint the ceiling originally. I hope this helps

Unfortunately you need to apply a coat of emulsion over grinning area again then a full coat across entire ceiling, then you will have a uniform coloured ceiling otherwise it will always show because of colour degradation over time

You can buy a spray called Polar damp & stain block it’s about £13.00 you apply the spray to the ceiling or wall and let it dry you can get it in varies of colours so once this as dried you can then apply the emulsion straight over the top of the spray this will give you a great finish hope it works for you kind regards Ashley
