Electric Shock Issue in Upstairs Bathroom
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.52 PM
In the upstairs bathroom, if you touch metal objects, you might get a shock. This issue seemed to be fixed when the downstairs wiring was initially messed up but later corrected. However, now I've noticed that when the water is running in the bathroom, touching metal objects can give you a mild electric shock.

Problem is caused by bonding, and can only be located and rectified by a continuity test done by an electrician. Call in an electrician as this is definitely not a DIY job.

Shocks off metal pipes is caused by poor earthing on your electrical installation. You may have missing or disconnected equipotential bonding conductors on the gas and water pipework, or a broken connection on the main earth conductor. It is important to get this investigated and rectified to eliminate the shocks.

May be worth getting a electrician out to verify the wiring and check the earthing arrangements.

Hi - This is something that needs to be addressed urgently. It’s impossible to say what is causing it but I would get a QUALIFIED Electrician to look at this ASAP. The bathroom is one of the locations that you are very vulnerable with regards to electric and ignoring this could prove fatal. I have been an Electrician for over 40 years. Thanks

This is potentially a very serious issue. STOP using the bath or shower immediately.
This needs urgent investigation by an electrician and you should not use the bathroom in the meantime as the risk of shock is large and increase as you get wet. An electrician in who can investigate why the earthing and bonding arrangements are not working correctly.
You should not be getting a shock of any level like this.

Something is leaking current to earth and this is manifesting through the earth bonding on your pipework. You need an urgent assessment of your circuits and appliances by someone who knows what they're doing.

It could be a diverted neutral current from a broken PEN conductor on the supply to the property. 100% get an electrician to test and confirm. If it is diverted neutral current, then contact your DNO immediately and they will be out to the property within 3 hours .
