Immersion switch not working

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.52 PM

Hi, I’m having a nightmare!! So my immersion thermostat live feed burnt out. I replaced it , required with new 2.m cable to a new switch. It worked for a time but the thermostat trooped a couple of times. A month on …. The new switch would not turn on. On opening switch the load neutral connection was burnt out. I have fitted a new switch box( the earth cut it feed was not secure on old one, thought this had caused problem) . On putting on supply no power seems to be going to switch as the light isn’t on and not water hot . I have an old backerlite fuse box it has four fuses, could this cause the switch to not function which fuse is for the immersion? Will the light on switch not work if element is blown ? Thx Thanks all, it was the fuse that had gone , the immersion now working 🙏😎.

It's down to loose connections, the fuse is not rated accordingly, the cable not the right size .....you should get an electrician

Hi There You have to be very careful with the connections in immersion heaters as they carry on a high load Sounds like you need a replacement consumer unit You will need a part P registered electrician to do this Regards

It could be down to a few issues, a loose connection on the wiring, water ingress or defective element. The fuse that supplies the immersion heater should have a blue dot or marking and be rated to 15 amps.

Sounds like the loos connections have in turn caused the fuse to blow. I’d be very careful and get an electrician to come have a look. Most likely going to need a fuse board upgrade.

Sounds like you’re attempting something without the relevant training and experience… it’s difficult to diagnose from just a description but it sounds like you have selected equipment that’s under rated for the load, I’d call an electrician. If you’ve got rewirable fuses then I’d strongly recommend upgrading to a modern consumer unit, this is notifiable under part P so will require a registered electrician.
