To calculate the amount of cement and ballast required for a shed base, as well as the depth of the excavation, we need to make a few assumptions. I will assume a standard depth for the base and provide you with approximate quantities. Please note that these estimates may vary based on specific requirements and local conditions.
Depth of excavation:
For a shed base, a common recommendation is to excavate a depth of around 150mm (6 inches). This depth provides a stable foundation for the base.
Calculation of materials:
To calculate the materials needed, we'll assume a 1:4:8 concrete mix ratio, which means one part cement, four parts ballast, and eight parts aggregate (by volume). The volume of the shed base can be calculated by multiplying the length, width, and depth.
Volume = Length x Width x Depth
Volume = 5m x 4m x 0.15m
Volume = 3 cubic meters
Since we need one part cement and four parts ballast, we can calculate the quantities:
Cement:
1 part (cement) = 1/13 (approximately 0.077 cubic meters)
Therefore, the amount of cement required would be 0.077 cubic meters.
Ballast:
4 parts (ballast) = 4/13 (approximately 0.308 cubic meters)
Thus, the amount of ballast required would be 0.308 cubic meters.
Please note that these quantities are for the concrete mix only and do not include any additional material needed for the foundation or finishing touches.
It's also worth considering adding a layer of hardcore or compacted sub-base before pouring the concrete, which can help with drainage and stability.
Remember to consult with a local expert or builder to ensure that these estimates are appropriate for your specific needs and local conditions.

Not sure what your putting on it but me personally
Dig 200mm
100mm type1
100mm concrete
20sqm of concrete

100 mm depth is sufficient for shed base so: 20m2 x 100mm=2m3 concrete or 4 tonne hand batching
