Old render removed before applying soffits and new silicone render?
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.34 PM
Hi, I am new to all of this…. The old cracked render on our home is over 25 years old and we are currently undergoing a large extension and renovation. We are going to have new Johnstone’s silicone render applied to the new extension exterior and the current older part of the house. Should the old render be removed before soffit is applied and before the new render is applied? Thankyou

Hi my name is Chris I would definitely recommend put new fascias and soffit on before any new render is applied and if the old render is coming off then yes remove this first thank RGR & WEBB RENDERING AND PLASTERING LTD

Yes, it is generally recommended to remove the old render before applying new render, including the soffit area. Removing the old render ensures a clean and stable surface for the new render to adhere to, improving the overall longevity and performance of the system. It also allows for any underlying issues or damage to be addressed before applying the new render

The silicone will cover up a world of sins with render and look ok, but when you consider the old render coming away from the wall it would be my recommendation to remove it. Silicone will act asif it’s holding it back and will for a while maybe. it is strong but break away render will break through the silicone too.

I agree to fit after render is removed. But i been plastering 25yrs and in some cases the render may be sound. And going over the top with base coat and mesh. Thanks. Lboundfordplastering & general building.
