Bricklaying & Repointing

Brickwork up to the soffit or soffit added after?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.34 PM

An extension wall was partially completed leaving a gap at the top ( a couple of blocks worth of gap) to allow for the roof to be completed ….. the roof was completed ( bar tiling) but the fascia boarding and soffits were added before the finishing brickwork…. On the ‘A’ of the roofline some brick was finished to the beams but the rest of the brickwork left with a gap… so some soffit adheres right up to the finished brick work on the sides of the ‘A line’ and then the bricklayers just came and filled in the gaps right up to and Ontop of the soffit! So half soffit ontop/up to brickwork and half brickwork ontop of/up to soffit on the same roofline …. It aesthetically looks uneven however is this the wrong way to do it too? Thankyou for your help! First time :)

Hi yes this is comepeltly wrong brick work should be built up level with the under side of your fascia board allowing your soffit to sit on top of the brick work allowing it to look level and astheticaly pleasing throughout which uPVC fascias soffets and gutters should always look

Depends if it’s timber frame or traditional build. Timber frame you would leave a gap of around 30mm to soffit depending on height to allow for srinkidge.. Traditional build bricks should but up to underside of joist then soffit added after

Ordinarily the brickwork should be built up to the soffit. Find it strange that the builder hasn’t done that!

I have always found it best to fit the soffits first and then build either brick or block flush to the soffit. Hope this helps!
