Is it okay to Plaster with Coving in Place

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.52 PM

Planning to have swirly artex ceilings plastered (to a smooth finish). Is it necessary to remove the coving first? Unfortunately the coving has also been artexed (yuk). We are currently taking some samples for asbestos testing (as the house was built in 1980). If it does come back positive, I'm guessing it will be quite expensive to have the coving removed and disposed of - would the cheaper option be to just to leave (and accept) the bobbly artexed coving and just to plaster the ceilings. Looking at about ten ceilings so already quite a substantial cost. Thank you

Hi there. Yes would be absolutely fine to plaster the ceilings and just have artex on the coving. Obviously would be nicer to remove all coving and have a smooth finish everywhere, but doesn’t mean ir can’t be done. Hope this helps 👍🏻

Hi there Based in my experience, yea that would be absolutely fine to plaster over artex without removing coving, to reduce the cost of project however just make sure there is not any linning paper which is def required to remove fist.

Plastering over artex with coving in place is achievable but to get the best finish you should remove the coving. Overboarding over possible asbestos is a cheaper option but removal and re boarding would be the best practice.

With 40 years experience, I wouldn’t consider plastering over artex ceilings Best to have plasterboard ceilings and coving removed as soon as asbestos like
