Lingering smell after a leak

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.50 PM

I had a leak in my kitchen a year ago the pipe that takes the washing machine, dishwasher and sink waste water became disconnected. It could have been like that for 2-3 weeks before I noticed standing water by my kitchen door and investigated. I removed all the baseboards and the water was lying all around my u shaped kitchen, I mopped it up hired a professional dehumidifier for a week and left the baseboards off for months and used odour absorbers, Although the smell has improved it is still there when my bungalow has been closed up for a couple of days and only the kitchen door left open. I really don’t know what else I can do any suggestions will be appreciated.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Cut an onion in half and put it under the unit. Onions absorbe the smell of anything in the air

I would check the waste pipe for any partial blockages or small open ends on the w.m spigots, also check that if you have a w.m standpipe that the traps are full of water this prevents bad smell coming up the drain. To deodorize the room, you can use lemons. You need to boil the lemons and keep it in the affected area of the house. This will surely help you remove the musty smell. Hope this helps.

Hello there. So this can take a while to clear up. To put it into perspective a customer of mine had a leak in the loft which damaged the walls. He also hired out a dehumidifier but also a specialist team to set it up. ( It was actually the insurance company who organised it all). They actually had to leave it running for about two months to fully do the job. So a week may not be long enough. It maybe worth having hiring it again for a few more weeks. Thanks Robbie
