Tiler is asking to lay 12mm Plywood before putting down LVT

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.50 PM

Hi, I'm aiming to install Karndean LVT on standard wood floor (1st floor). Tiler is recommending to install 12mm plywood base, smooth edges and then lay LVT on top. His reason is over time LVT tiles will show floor imperfection (if any) over time. Need to ask if I should spend extra for plywood? Thanks, Muhammad

You want atleast 6mm plywood, fixed at about 100mm around the edges, 150mm in the middle and feather finish on the joins of the plywood. It's expensive initially but you can expect the floor to last a long time. I guess he's recommending 12mm to raise the floor level for some reason? In my own ensuite i used 2 layers of 6mm (because i had that in stock) and then 2 layers of smoothing compound to build the floor level back up after removing ceramic tiles and 12mm plywood. I feel super confident that floor will last atleast 10 years, probably last more than 20. It's like painting, it's all in the prep work to make it last.
