Attaching lean to pergola to the wall with pipes

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.50 PM

Hi there, I'm hoping to get a lean to Pergola soon ready for summer but I'm struggling to think of the best way to attach my ledger piece. The issue is my back wall has two cast iron pipes attached to it. Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best way to do this? I was personally thinking of getting 150x150mm beam (either wood or aluminium extrusion) to make a spacer. Thanks in advance! 👍

Attaching a ledger piece to a wall with existing cast iron pipes can be a challenging task, but there are several possible solutions you can consider: Mount the ledger board above the pipes: If the pipes are located near the bottom of the wall, you may be able to attach the ledger board above them. This will require extending the height of your posts accordingly, but it will allow you to avoid cutting or drilling through the pipes. Cut a notch in the ledger board: If the pipes are located higher up on the wall, you may be able to cut a notch in the ledger board to accommodate them. However, this will weaken the ledger board and could compromise its structural integrity, so it's important to ensure that the remaining wood is still strong enough to support the weight of the pergola. Use offset brackets: Offset brackets are specially designed to attach a ledger board to a wall with obstructions such as pipes or electrical boxes. These brackets extend out from the wall and allow you to mount the ledger board at a slight angle to avoid the obstruction. You can find offset brackets at most home improvement stores or online. Relocate the pipes: If the pipes are not essential and can be moved, you may consider relocating them to a different part of the wall. This will require the help of a professional plumber and may not be feasible depending on the layout of your home. Ultimately, the best solution will depend on the specific location and configuration of the pipes and the design of your pergola. You may want to consult with a professional contractor or architect to ensure that your pergola is structurally sound and meets all necessary building codes and regulations.
