Connecting my new Built in combination microwave oven
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.50 PM
We have just purchased a new 3.3Kw combi microwave oven to replace our old fault unit. When trying to connect electrical supply it was found that the new cable and the original cable was too short. Whilst following the old cable back we noticed that it is connected to the same supply as the 6.5Kw induction hob which goes through a cooker isolation switch to the 40A RCB in the consumer unit in 6mm cable. The new microwave only has 1.5 mm cable attached, am i ok to connect the two cables together Thank you

No it isn't okay. The current carrying capacity of 1.5 cable is at max 20amps. If a fault were to develop, the cable will burn before the 40amp breaker trips. Get an electrician to come, have a look, and design the set up for you.

Fuses and breakers are there to protect the cable. The cable should be big enough to cope with the power requirements of the appliance. The best option for you would be to either have a single socket installed and a plug fitted to the microwave cord. This plug will have a 13amp fuse included which will protect the cable in the event of a fault. The alsternative would be to fit a switched fused spur that also has a fuse that will do the same job. Either of these options would require an electrician to fit and sign it off.
I hope that helps.
