Changing from a hob to a hob with.oven
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.50 PM
So we have moved into a house with a rayburn. Great for heat not so great for cooking. There is also a hob which on fuse box says it has 30amp supply and a switch that says cooker supply. We want to replace the hob with a electric oven and ceramic hob all in one. I have went online to look at these. Have seen one with a requirement for a 16amp fuse. Can this be ran using the current set up or is the oven and hob needing separate power supply. I am so confused 😕
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You can but will need to take the MCB supplying that circuit down to a 16 amp or 20 amp. The cable is above requirements making it a simple matter of changing down the circuit breaker at your Consumer Unit. A 20 min job for any electrician. New MCB not expensive either.

As previously state by others you can down rate the MCB to a 16amp version provided you can source one of the same manufacturer, but from the information provided it appears that you may not have an MCB but a rewireable fuse carrier (30amp while most MCBs would say 32amp) if this is the case it is also highly likely that you also don't have 30mA RCD protection for this circuit.
I would recommend you have the circuit checked by a qualified electrician before proceeding further.

You could fit a lot more powerful oven and hob and leave the 30amp supply. My oven is separate (5.3kw) and cooks a good un but the separate hob is under juiced (me being a cheap skate) and the wife moans it has always gotta be on max setting and i hear understrength hobs can only generate the heat to max on 2 rings at a time. You will need an electrician for any cooker that needs hard wiring and you should get them to check your connections before buying anything.
