Plumbing

Radiator leaking when hot water turned on.

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.50 PM

Ive just took off a radiator and thought i had isolated it as one side only had a small drip, old fixings so just thought that was the issue. Turns out i hadn't isolated at all as when i turned on the hot water and the boiler kicked in a steady stream of water started coming out of one of the radiator pipes. My question is should that be able to happen? I thought central heating and hot water were on different pipe lines/systems and they weren’t connected other than coming from the same boiler?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Some central heating systems have what they call a “summer circuit.” This means that radiators (normally towel radiators in bathrooms) can be on the same heating circuit as your hot water. The benefit of this is that, although you have your heating off in the summer you can still have warm dry towels as those radiators will get hot when you heat your water tank. Water from radiators should NEVER be linked to your taps in any shape or form. If this is the case then this would need looking into immediately. Not only for your personal health but also the health of your heating system.
