FLINK TRUSSES linked by a nailed on board

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.50 PM

My L shaped timber framed bungalow was built about 20years ago. It has flink - (shaped like a `` W``) trusses above the lounge which measures 7m x 5m. I am looking to put some lighting in this roof space and chip board the floor as I want to use this space for storage of light items like xmas decorations, kids toys etc, The trusses have a board just one board 100mm width and 12mm thickness that runs the 7metre length of the 7 trusses and is nailed to the top of each truss in the middle of the roof space with a 4 inch nail. I do not know if this board is just part of the construction process to keep the trusses upright and in position while the roof was being built or if it`s of more important consideration than that. The roof is totally boarded (sarking) under the tiles and felt. I would like to remove the board that is nailed to each truss so that I can put in some downward facing lighting in the highest part of the roof space and roof trusses but I`m not sure if I can do this. without affecting the integrity of the roof. Thanks in advance for replies.

4x1 cross members on trussed roofs are structural from the point they’re for lateral restraint of each truss so they stay square and true removing of these can cause roof issues that I have seen first hand! Before wanting lights in a loft space if these are moved they should be replaced first as they can be repositioned if you’re an experienced roofer like ourselves.

Truss roofs are designed by engineers at built point . If you would like to change it get a structural engineer to visit and tell you how to remove and alter the roof structure. Engineers are required for all roof structural alterations
