What mortar do I use on what was a lime mortar now covered in a cement mortar

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.33 PM

I have a rubble granite with a few flint stone house and over the years a lime mortar was used but in more recent years it has been covered with a layer of cement mortar perhaps to make it look more uniform but there are some areas recently cemented badly by a plumber with 100% cement that need to be removed before damage occurs. How would you recommend this is done and what mortar would you suggest replaces it?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, I recommend removing all cement mortar as it prevents the house from breathing. Lime mortar is a breathable building material that stabilises the internal environment. By using cement mortar or cement you can start getting damp issues at home. Obviously, we're talking about a situation where the lime mortar was replaced on the whole house, that's where we can start having damp issues if it's only a tiny area simply remove cement/ cement mortar mix and replace it with lime mortar. I hope that helps. Kind regards Adam
