Tiling

Re-tiling bathroom walls and not sure of backing.

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.45 PM

Hi, So I've removed my old bathroom tiles from the walls and am going to replace them, however I'm not sure how best to prepare the walls. Some parts are back to the brick, whilst others are plasterboard but still have a lot of the adhesive all over them. Initially I was going to use bonding coat on the brick walls but I think I would still need to chip these all the way back to the brick first as some areas still have the board and adhesive that was on top of the brick. The other walls I thought I might need to remove and re-plasterboard but now I'm not sure if I'm just over doing. EDIT: think i might be using tile backing boards now. Not sure how best to secure these to the brick wall though, adhesive or screws Thanks for any advice, Si.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Best to re plasterboard walls for good finish .so should look a nice finished tiling job .also you can use tile backer boards on the walls probably cheaper using new plaster boards . always keep a handful of tiles for spares in the near future . regards Mike tiler

Best thing to do is remove existing plasterboards, the adhesive will be too stubborn to remove and all loose adhesive on the brickwork then dot and dab your plasterboards to the walls with suitable adhesive but remember to prime the walls first and allow time to dry, I'm assuming all your walls are masonry/ brick - any stud walls need scrwed in. In the wet area you must tank the walls using Mapei Tanking Kit from Tile Giant or Laticrete Hydro Ban from Topps Tiles Hope this helps Scott McGuire Active Tiling Services

Few options you can do . Plasterboard walls using moisture plasterboard then re-skimmed flat for painting. If you are to tile. You can stick cement board which can be tiled . Or can remove loose plaster, fill and rule off under coat such as thisle bonding or hardwall then re-skim. Personally I would stick moisture plasterboard then skim. Paul.

I agree with Mike however, use moisture resistant plasterboard glued with a suitable plasterboard adhesive.
