How to tell if there's an external lintel
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.45 PM
Trying to establish if I'm going to have a problem replacing my patio doors. No external signs of a lintel (no soldiers just horizontal brickwork) and current sliding doors are in a wooden frame. Opening is 2.8m and above is brick work for first floor and roof. This feels like a large span to not have a lintel but what would be the best way to confirm. Windows company I'm using have suggested consulting a structural engineer but is there an easy (and cost effective) way to confirm one way or the other. Was built in the late 60s.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Tooth out 2 course higher than top of door frame... only take 2 bricks out as can easily be replaced. This should uncover any lintel. Hope this helps.

You can do it yourself, would take no more then 15 minutes

Just put a long drill bit and drill through the top of your frame with doors open and you will be able to tell if your drill bit hits a lintel as will make a loud noise many will take 2 seconds many thanks
