Damp Proofing

Paint peeling off damp proofed wall

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.45 PM

I live in an Edwardian property and we had a wall damp proofed before we moved in. We left it for weeks before painting. The paint on this wall has started flaking off. We use a dehumidifier in the room and keep the windows open to improve ventilation which we’ve been advised by a number of professionals to do. Not sure how to resolve this issue of flaking paint as I’m quite worried about why it’s happening. Thank you!

Paint peeling is because the new plaster was not treated with a plaster primer . A mist coat which is absolutely hopeless and destroys the composition of the paint; then it peels.

find the source of the water ingress solve that and your dampness will disappear, that type of house very seldom suffers from rising damp & an injected damp proof course is usually ineffective and a total waste of money

Most likely the wall has not dried out yet. Yes, all properties must have internal ventilation, usually via trickle vents. Extraction in kitchen and bathroom is very important. Domestic dehumidifiers are really a waste if space, yes they appear to remove moisture but they are not. Just keep the room well ventilated and warmer than normal and it will dry out unless there is a significant issue which is unlikely. Hope this helps.

Why would you need to have a Victorian property damp proofed?...you've unfortunately gone about it in the totally wrong way. No doubt the plastic paint isn't helping either!
